Think of the end of a piece of work, at the moment when a thank you would normally come - and it does not. Someone has carried the chairs, checked the forms, cooked the meal. The room goes quiet, people move on, and the words never arrive. This word names that missing thank you, and it can point at either end of it: the work that never gets one, or the person who never gives one.
