Water closing over the top of something until nothing is left showing. Not a splash, not a wet surface — the line of the water passes above the thing, and it is gone from view. Everything the word does keeps that one line: the water can be real, or it can be work, grief and debt rising over a person's head, or it can be your own hand holding a feeling down where nobody can see it.
From the word’s history
Borrowed from Latin submergere, from sub ('under') plus mergere ('to plunge'); by surface analysis, sub- + merge. The two pieces still say what the word does: to go, or put, under.
借自拉丁文 submergere：sub 是「在下面」，mergere 是「浸下去」。從構詞上看就是 sub- + merge。這兩塊到今天還說著同一件事：往下面去，或把東西放到下面去。
