    To stifle something means to stop it before it can fully happen or continue, especially a natural reaction or a feeling - you stifle a yawn, a laugh, or tears by holding them back, or you stifle creativity, criticism, or free speech by not letting it develop. It can also describe air that is stifling - so hot and still that it's hard to breathe.
