Take the word sick and add -en, an old ending that means make or become. What you get is a word for movement in one direction: toward being sick. A person can drift that way on their own over weeks, or something can push them that way. English then lends the same bodily feeling to the mind, because a cruel or unfair thing can turn your stomach even when your body is perfectly well.

Wiktionary gives sicken as Middle English sekenen, that is sick plus -en, and lists Danish sygne and Swedish sjukna as cognates, both meaning to fall ill. The make-or-become ending is why one word covers making someone ill and becoming ill.
