Repel has three common uses. In a fight or war, to repel an attack means to successfully push the attackers back. For physical things, to repel something means to keep it away or stop it from sticking or getting close - a jacket can repel rain, a spray can repel insects. And for feelings, if something repels you, it disgusts you or makes you want to get away from it - a bad smell can repel people.
