You can picture next as 'the very one right after this' — stand at where you are now in a line, a calendar, or a row of houses, and next is whatever sits immediately beside you with nothing in between. It always means 'the closest one coming up', whether in time, in order, or in space.

可以想成「緊接在現在這個之後、中間沒有別的那一個」：你站在隊伍、日曆、或一排房子裡現在的位置，next 就是緊貼著你、再過去的那一個。不管是時間上、順序上、還是空間上，它指的都是「最靠近、馬上就到的下一個」。

From the word’s history

From Old English niehsta 'nearest', the superlative of neah 'near' (the same root as 'nigh'). 'Next' literally means 'nearest'.

源自古英語 niehsta「最近的」，是 neah「近」（也就是 nigh 的字根）的最高級。next 字面上就是「最近的那一個」——所有用法都從「最靠近」這個畫面長出來。
