You can picture standing on a timeline and pointing backwards: 'previous' marks whatever sits earlier than the thing you're looking at now — it came before. Sometimes it just means 'at some earlier point', sometimes 'the one right before this one', but it always points to the past side of 'now'.

可以想成你站在一條時間線上,往後指:previous 標的就是「比你現在講的這件事更早、發生在它之前的那一個」。有時泛指「更早的某個」,有時特指「緊接在這之前的那一個」,但它永遠指向「現在」的過去那一側。
