Picture lining up several amounts side by side and pointing at the tallest pile: 'most' marks the top of that comparison — the greatest quantity, degree, or number of all. From there it bends two ways: toward 'the biggest share of a group' (most people) and toward 'the highest point on a scale of a quality' (the most beautiful). 'Most' is just the superlative twin of 'more' — where 'more' adds one step up, 'most' reaches the very top step.
