Picture the pile of bags and cases you have to haul with you on the day you travel — heavy, , following you everywhere. Luggage names that whole pile as one idea rather than as separate objects, which is why it is not counted one by one: one bag is a piece of luggage, two are two pieces of luggage.

From the word’s history

From the 1590s, made of the verb lug 'to drag' (late 14c., 'pull something slowly or with effort', from Scandinavian — compare Swedish lugga, Norwegian lugge 'to pull by the hair') plus -age; so, literally 'what has to be lugged about'. The weight and the nuisance are built into the word: it names the dragging, not the bags.

luggage 出現在 1590 年代，是動詞 lug（拖、費力地拉；14 世紀晚期從北歐語進入英文）加上字尾 -age，字面就是「必須一路拖著走的那些東西」。所以重量和麻煩感本來就寫在這個字裡——它命名的其實是「得拖著走」這件事，而不是袋子本身。
