Wiktionary records this word as a noun made straight out of the verb carry on, and that is the thread to hold: what you get here is the thing, or the scene, that an ongoing action leaves behind. Carrying something on to a plane leaves you a bag in your hand. Carrying on and on leaves a room full of noise. The two pictures look nothing alike, and the word behaves like two different words in practice, so it is worth meeting them one at a time.
