Used to say that it is a good thing something happened or was done, because without it the situation would have been unpleasant or difficult.

You can think of it as the speaker back and pointing at one thing that saved the situation. It doesn't describe how someone did something — it comments on the whole story: things could easily have gone badly, and this one detail is why they didn't.
