    unexpected 講的是「事情發生了，但你事先完全沒想到」，重點在「不在你的預測或計畫裡」，本身不分好壞——unexpected gift 是驚喜，unexpected delay 是麻煩。可以想成 expect 是「我早就在等這件事」，前面加上 un- 就像把「在等」整個拿掉，剩下的就是「它自己冒出來了」。跟 surprising 容易搞混：surprising 講的是「讓人驚訝的那種感覺」，unexpected 講的是「本來沒被預期到」，所以實驗數據可以是 unexpected 但不一定讓人吃驚。

One way to hold it: to 'expect' something is to have already made room for it — you have a picture in your head of what is coming, and life just walks into that picture. 'Unexpected' is what arrives when no room was made. It comes in through a door you were not watching. Notice the word says nothing about good or bad — an unexpected gift and an unexpected bill are equally unexpected. The whole meaning sits in the gap between the picture you had and what actually showed up.
