You can picture the thing itself, sitting there not matching what people would normally guess — a result nobody predicted, a price far lower than usual, a quiet person turning out to be the best singer in the room. Surprising points at the event, fact or object that has the power to break someone's expectation, whether or not anyone is actually standing there feeling it.
