You can picture kindly as an action carried out with a warm hand: someone does the thing, and the way they do it shows they care about you. He kindly gave me a lift — the lift is the act, kindly is the gentleness wrapped around it. From that warm manner, the word stretches two ways: outward to a person who always seems that way, and — oddly — into fixed phrases where it marks the opposite, an attitude someone refuses to .
