You can picture industry as large-scale, hard work that turns raw materials into goods — the busy machinery of making things on a big scale. From that one picture grow both the outward sense (whole sectors of production) and the inward sense (the diligence of someone who works hard).

可以想成「大規模、勤勤懇懇地把原料變成成品」——一整套忙碌運轉、大量製造東西的機器。一種想法是：從這個「努力大量生產」的核心畫面，往外長出「整個生產領域」，往內長出「一個人埋頭苦幹的勤奮」。

From the word’s history

Latin 'industria' meant diligence / hard work; the modern 'large-scale production' sense grew later from that idea of organized, hard effort — which is why both 'a hard-working quality' and 'manufacturing' still live in the same word.

拉丁文 industria 原本指「勤奮、努力」；後來「大規模生產」這個意思才從「有組織地下苦功」延伸出來——這正是為什麼「勤奮」和「工業」至今仍同住在一個字裡。
