You can picture 'house' as a roofed shelter built for living in — four walls and a roof that cover and hold the people and things inside. Almost every other sense is this same picture stretched: stretch it to the people under that roof, to bigger buildings that 'house' a special purpose, to an institution treated as one household, and — as a verb — to the act of giving something a roof to live or sit under.

From Old English 'hus' (dwelling, shelter), from Proto-Germanic '*husan', perhaps from a root meaning 'to cover, hide' — i.e. a covered shelter. That 'covering / holding inside' sense is exactly why the verb 'house' means to give shelter or to store something.
