Picture a boundary — the wall, skin, or border of something — and then point to what lies on the inner side of it. Internal always means 'on the inside, within these walls', as opposed to the outside world. Whether the 'container' is a box, a body, a company, or a country, the word does the same job: it keeps your attention inside the line.
