From Middle English housynge, from housen ("to house, shelter, receive into one's house") + -ing. The verb sense — to put something inside and shelter it — is what carries over to a machine's casing.

housing 是 house（房子；也可當動詞「收容、安置」）加上 -ing，來自中古英語 housynge。關鍵在 house 這個動詞：不只是「房子」這個物件，而是「把……安置進去、罩起來」的動作。理解了這一層，機器的「外殼」為什麼也叫 housing 就不奇怪了——它 houses（收容、包住）裡面的零件。
