Picture a hard case with something soft and valuable inside — an egg, a nut, a snail. The case does two jobs: it protects, and it hides. Almost every use of shell picks up one of those. A building with nothing left inside is a shell; a shy person is inside one; a bullet's metal is one; and the verb is either those or cracking the case open.
