Wiktionary traces this group to Middle English gobbe / gobet, from Old French gobet, gobe meaning a lump or a mouthful, and further back to a Gaulish form meaning neb or muzzle. A mouthful is exactly the size of the lump the modern word names.

Wiktionary gives this as a separate route from the lump word: probably from Irish and Scottish Gaelic gob, meaning beak or mouth. That is why the beak picture, not the lump picture, sits behind it.
