Picture the shelves in a video shop or the tabs on a streaming app: horror here, romance there, documentaries at the end. Nothing about the shelf says how good a film is — it says what to expect once it starts: the kind of story, the mood, the moves it will make. That shelf can be held as the picture inside 'genre'. It also explains the quiet promise inside the word: when you choose the horror shelf you have already agreed to be scared, and a film that breaks the promise feels odd even if it is well made.
