    Feeling afraid, because you think something bad might happen to you or that you might get hurt. It can say how someone feels inside, or how they look to other people.

    frightened 講的是「人（或動物）心裡在怕」，主角是感覺到害怕的那一個。放在英文的害怕家族裡可以這樣排：scared 最口語、最常說，frightened 中間，afraid 聽起來稍微正式一點，terrified 則強得多。frightened 可以想成是從 fright（突然被嚇一跳）長出來的：frighten 是「把人嚇到」，加了 -ed 就變成「被嚇到之後的狀態」，所以句型都在說誰在怕：frightened of the dark、frightened to move。

You can picture frightened as what happens on the inside of the person: something bad might be coming, and the body reacts before the thinking does — the breath goes shallow, the eyes go wide, you want to step back. The -ed ending points at the one receiving the feeling, so frightened always describes the person or animal that feels it.
