    To make someone feel afraid. A person, an animal, a sudden noise, or even a thought can frighten someone.

    「frighten」的主詞是「造成害怕的那個東西」（人、聲音、面具，甚至一個念頭），受詞是「心裡怕起來的人」：You're frightening me. 可以想成 frighten 是把「怕」這個感覺送進對方心裡，所以覺得怕的人要說 I was frightened（我收到了那個感覺），不會說 I frighten。它跟 scare 幾乎同義，只是 scare 比較口語、日常，frighten 稍微正式一點；再強一級是 terrify（怕到極點），旁邊還有 startle（突然嚇一跳，不一定真的害怕）。

One way to picture it: fear being put into someone from the outside. The thing that causes the fear comes first in the sentence — a person, a dog, a loud noise, even a thought — and the person who feels afraid comes after it.

害怕不是自己冒出來的，是被什麼東西「放進」某個人心裡的。frighten 這個動詞的重點在方向——句子的主詞是那個製造恐懼的東西（一個人、一隻狗、一聲巨響，甚至只是一個念頭），承受的人放在後面。所以我們說 The noise frightened her，而不是說她 frighten；她是被嚇的那一方。
