You can picture terrified as fear that has already reached you and taken over your body: not the light worry that keeps you thinking, but the kind that freezes you where you stand — your legs will not move, your voice will not come out, and for a moment your mind cannot form a plan. Words like afraid or scared describe the feeling; terrified describes the feeling at full strength, big enough to take control.
