Think of two bones that meet at a joint. Each one sits in its own place, and because it sits there the arm can lift, the knee can bend, the hand can close. Now push one of them out of that place. Nothing is missing and nothing is broken — but the parts no longer meet, so the whole thing stops working and the shape looks wrong. That is the picture the word carries wherever it goes: a piece knocked out of its place, and everything that depended on that place going still.

Wiktionary gives the make-up of the word directly: dis- plus locate. The prefix means away or apart and locate means to put in place, so the word says out of its place before it says anything about bones.
