Picture a place or a person that people used to be with — and then those people walked away and did not come back. What is left behind is still there, but alone.
原本有人在的地方或身邊，那些人走掉了，而且沒有回來。留下來的東西還在原地——街道還在、房子還在、人還在——但周圍空了。這個字的重點不只是「沒有人」，而是「本來有人，人走了」：所以它帶著一種被留在原地的味道。一個從來沒人住過的荒島不太會用 deserted 來形容心情，但一條晚上十一點空掉的鬧區大街會，因為你知道白天它是滿的。
