Picture a place that someone was supposed to keep filled: a post on a ship, a bed in a barracks, a chair at a kitchen table. Desertion is the name for that place being left empty by the very person who was meant to hold it. Two things stay inside the word wherever it goes. Nobody gave permission, and nobody is coming back.
