A person works the machine while you watch. A shop leaves one copy out so you can touch it. A game hands you the first two levels. A band records the song roughly so someone can hear the idea. Even a street full of fits: a crowd is making its feeling visible in public. The common thread is showing rather than telling.

Wiktionary records demo (noun) as a clipping of demonstration and of various other words beginning with demo-. Demonstration itself carries the idea of pointing something out where it can be seen, which is why the showing family and the street-protest family sit on the same short word.

A different demo, sharing only its spelling with the one about showing. Here the picture is a room being emptied of everything old: tiles off the wall, out, floor up, dust everywhere. It is the noisy first stage of a building job, and it is usually the quick, cheap part — what comes after it is neither.
