Picture someone taking one out of a huge pot of soup. Nobody can drink the whole pot to find out how it tastes, so you take one small piece out — and you trust that piece to tell you about everything you did not take. That is the whole idea of sample: a small part, pulled out of something too big to handle, standing in for the rest. Everything else the word does grows from that one move — whether the pot is soup, a shop's whole product line, a country's whole population, or a three-minute recording.
