Brand-new means new and not yet used — so new that nobody has worn it, driven it, opened it, or tried it out. A brand-new phone still has the plastic on; a brand-new pair of shoes has clean soles. People also stretch it to ideas and starts: a brand-new plan, a brand-new school year, meaning completely fresh, not second-hand in any way. It is a strong everyday word, a bit more colourful than just new. You will see it with a (brand-new) especially before a noun; some writers drop the after the noun (the car is brand new). Brand here is not the company name on the box.
