Picture a pair of hands that have done the same thing ten thousand times — a potter at the wheel, someone weaving, someone shaping wood. The knowing is not in a book; it has soaked into the hands over years. Craft can be thought of as that kind of ability: skill built up slowly by doing, and the work that such skill produces. Everything else the word does grows out of that picture — the trade you practise, the making of a single careful thing, and even the sly kind of skill someone uses on other people.

From the word’s history

Old English cræft, from a Proto-Germanic root meaning 'power, physical strength, might'; already in Old English it had widened through a notion of 'mental power' to 'skill, dexterity; art, science, talent', and then to 'trade, handicraft, employment requiring special skill'. The 'small boat' sense appears only by the 1670s, probably from a phrase like 'vessels of small craft', referring either to the trade such boats did or the seamanship they needed — or possibly keeping the word's original sense of 'power'.

craft 來自古英文 cræft，更早的日耳曼語根意思是「力量、體力」。在古英文時期它就經由「心智上的力量」這一步擴大成「技巧、靈巧、藝術、才能」，再走到「行業、手工、需要特殊本領的工作」。而「小船」這個意思要到 1670 年代才出現，一種說法是來自 vessels of small craft 這類講法：指的可能是這些船做的生意，或是駕馭它們所需要的本事，也可能還保留著這個字最早「力量」的意思。
