From Latin ars (stem art-) 'skill, craft, a practical knowing-how'. The oldest core is 'skill', and the modern senses fan out from there: the skill of making beautiful things, the things so made, and any learned ability.

A completely different word that only shares the spelling: this 'art' is an old form of the verb 'be'. Picture old poetry or the Bible — 'thou art' simply means 'you are'. It has nothing to do with paintings; it is the verb 'are' said the old-fashioned way to one person.

From Old English eart, the second person singular present of 'to be' — the same verb family as 'are'. Used with the old pronoun 'thou'. This is etymologically unrelated to art 'skill/creative work' (from Latin ars).
