One way to hold it: a person whose money is not sitting still. They put it into factories, shops, or shares so that it works and grows — and around that habit a whole economic system is built, where the things that produce wealth belong to private hands rather than to the state. Everything the word means grows from that one figure: money used as a tool to make more money.
