To wake something that was asleep — a person, or a feeling that was lying quiet inside them — so that it stirs and comes to life.
本來睡著的東西被叫醒了。最原始的是真的一個人在深睡中被搖醒；但 arouse 更常用在「心裡本來安靜躺著的某種感覺」——好奇、懷疑、怒氣——被外面的什麼一碰，就動了起來。所以這個字的重點不是「製造」一種情緒，而是「喚起」它：那東西原本就在，只是睡著；現在醒了。

a- (intensifying prefix) + rouse "to wake, to stir up" — literally "to wake thoroughly".
由 a-（加強語氣的前綴）＋ rouse（喚醒、驚起）組成，字面就是「徹底叫醒」。rouse 本來用在把獵物從藏身處驚起，所以 arouse 從一開始就帶著「本來伏著不動的東西被驚動而起身」的畫面，這正是今天所有用法的共同底色。
