The small metal lever on a gun that your finger pulls. One light pull, and a whole chain of things goes off at once — the hammer drops, the powder lights, the bullet . Every other meaning grows from that 'one pull sets everything off' picture.

From Dutch trekker 'trigger', from the verb trekken 'to pull'. The trigger is literally 'the pulling part' — you pull it, and what follows happens.

trigger 來自荷蘭語 trekker（扳機），字根 trekken 就是「拉、扯」。所以扳機的本義是「被拉動的那個部件」——拉一下，後面的事就跟著發生。
