Putting one more thing onto what is already there, so the pile or group grows by that piece. The picture is of reaching over and dropping an extra item onto an existing heap — there was this much, now there is this much plus one more.

From the word’s history

From Latin 'addere' = ad- (to) + dare (to give): 'to give to, put to'. The root is literally 'put one thing to another', which is still the exact core of every modern sense.

源自拉丁文 addere：ad-（朝向、加到）＋ dare（給），字面就是「把一樣東西放到另一樣上」。這個「往上添一份」的根，到今天仍是每個用法的正核心——不論添的是物、是數字、是一句話。
