You can picture lend as handing something of yours to someone else for a while, on the understanding it comes back — you stay the owner, they just get the use of it. From this 'give for a while, expecting return' picture grow the money sense, the fixed phrases (lend a hand, lend an ear), and the abstract 'add a quality to something' uses.
