Picture a soldier being carried off a battlefield: something sharp went into the body and left an opening that is still there. That is the difference between `wounded` and `hurt` or `` — a wound is a break in the skin, made by something that cut or pierced, usually by another person on purpose. The word keeps both halves of that picture wherever it goes: the opening, and the fact that someone made it.
