The main picture is a break in the skin made by something sharp: a cut that is open, that hurts, and that has to close again over time. English carries the whole of that picture across to feelings — a remark can open you up the same way, and old hurt can be years later. Be careful with the last item on this list: the past tense of wind is spelled the same but is a different word entirely, with a different sound.

The injury word comes from Old English wund 'injury involving piercing or cutting of the tissue of the body', with the verb from Old English wundian 'inflict a piercing injury on'. The wound that is the past of wind is a separate word, from a different verb going back to Proto-Germanic *windan — the two are homonyms, alike in spelling only.

「傷口」這個字來自古英語 wund「刺穿或割開身體組織造成的傷」，動詞則來自古英語 wundian「使受刺傷」。而作為 wind 過去式的 wound 是另一個字，來源是原始日耳曼語 *windan 那條線——兩者只是拼法相同的同形異義詞，沒有親屬關係。
