You can picture wise as the quality of someone who has seen a lot of life and therefore judges well: when a choice is wise, it is the one a person of good sense and long experience would make. The whole word circles around 'good judgement built on knowing' — knowing how things really work, and acting on that knowing.

From the word’s history

Wise comes from the same old Germanic root as 'wit' and the verb 'to wot/witan' (to know); -wise as a suffix (clockwise, lengthwise) is the same word meaning 'way, manner'. So both the adjective (full of knowing) and the suffix (in the manner/direction of) trace back to one root about way-of-knowing.

wise 與 wit（機智）、古英語 witan（知道）同源，本義跟「知、見識」相連；而字尾 -wise（clockwise 順時針、lengthwise 縱向）其實是同一個古字，意思是「方式、樣子」。所以形容詞的「有見識」和字尾的「就…方式／方向而言」其實同根，都從「知的方式」這個老意思分出來。
