Think of a plate at a buffet next to a plate holding one thing repeated: the first one has many different kinds on it, and that difference is what makes it worth looking at. 'Varied' describes a whole made of parts that are not all the same — and it carries a warm tilt, the sense that the mixture is interesting rather than merely mixed.
