Wide — a large distance from one side across to the other. Think of a wide river or wide shoulders: lots of room across. From physical width comes the idea of covering a lot, or staying at the general level instead of the fine detail.

可以想成「從一邊到另一邊很寬」的畫面：寬寬的河、寬寬的肩膀，橫向有很多空間。broad 的核心比較像這個「橫寬」的感覺。從實際的寬度，再延伸出「涵蓋很多」「停在大方向、不鑽細節」這些抽象的用法。

From Old English 'brad' meaning 'wide, spacious, extended'. The core has stayed 'wide' throughout; the abstract senses (broad range, broad outline) are metaphors of physical width.
