Picture a road that gets wider as it goes — the edges move apart and more can fit side by side. That is the word. English then applies it to things with no physical width at all: a mind that takes in more, an appeal that reaches more people. Note it works both ways: you can broaden something, or it can broaden by itself.
可以想成：一條路愈往前愈寬——兩邊的邊界往外移，能並排容納的東西變多了。這個「變寬」就是這個字。英文接著把它用在根本沒有寬度的東西上：一個裝得下更多的心智、一個能打動更多人的訴求。要注意它兩邊都能用：可以是你把它加寬（及物），也可以是它自己變寬（不及物）。
