You can picture extend as something reaching out and growing longer or farther: a line, a piece of land, an arm — it stretches from where it is now to somewhere further. Everything else is this same act of 'making it reach further', applied to time, size, scope, or even a polite gesture.

From Latin extendere 'to stretch out' (ex- 'out' + tendere 'to stretch'). The modern core — reaching/stretching further — sits right on this root.

源自拉丁文 extendere「向外伸展」（ex-「向外」＋ tendere「拉、伸」）。現代的核心畫面——往外伸得更遠——正好就坐落在這個字根上，所以各種用法都還帶著「拉長、伸出去」的味道。
