A difference between things of the same kind, or a change from the usual amount, level, or form of something.
差異；變化
Picture one thing and something else that is almost the same but not quite: the gap between them is the variation. You can still see what they share — that is why the difference shows up at all.
可以想成兩樣東西擺在一起，明明是同一類、卻不完全一樣，那道差距就是 variation。關鍵在於底下有個共同的東西沒變，所以「不一樣的地方」才浮得出來——溫度每天都有高有低，但仍然是同一個地方的溫度。從這道差距出發，這個字既可以指「差異本身」，也可以指「因為差異而生出來的那個版本」。
