You can picture a secretary as the trusted person who handles another person's or a group's private business — their letters, their records, their meetings. Whether it's an office, a government department, or a small club, the same figure : someone to keep the paperwork and confidential affairs of someone bigger than themselves.

From the word’s history

From Medieval Latin secretarius 'confidant, one entrusted with secrets; clerk who keeps records and writes for another', from Latin secretum 'a secret, a hidden thing'. The original secretary was literally someone trusted with private matters — which still underlies every modern sense, from the office worker to the Secretary of State.

源自中世紀拉丁文 secretarius，意思是「親信、被託付機密的人；替人保管紀錄、代筆書信的書記」，再往上來自拉丁文 secretum「祕密、隱藏之事」。最早的 secretary 字面上就是「被信任去處理私密事務的人」——這層意思至今仍墊在每個現代用法底下，從辦公室祕書到國務卿都是。
