Picture the first desk you meet when you push open the door of a hotel, a clinic, or an office — the desk placed right where strangers arrive. The person sitting there is the one who looks up, says your name back to you, and decides where you go next: sign here, take a seat, the doctor is ready, go up to the fourth floor. That position can be held as the picture inside the word: the person stationed at the point where the outside world enters, whose job is to receive people and pass them on smoothly.
