One way to picture receiver: something arrives — a parcel, a voice, a ball, a signal, a company's debts — and at the far end there is the one that takes it in. The word never describes the sending. It always points at the end of the journey, at whoever or whatever is waiting there with open hands. That is why a person and a machine can share the same name: the question receiver answers is simply who catches it.

Wiktionary records receiver as inherited from Middle English receyvour, from Anglo-Norman receverre / receivour, and later re-formed as receive + -er. The -er ending is the ordinary one that names the doer or the doing thing, which is why the same word covers both a person who receives and a device that receives.
