You can think of 'offense' as a strike that lands against someone or something — knocking into a rule, or knocking into a person's feelings. Whether it is breaking a law or hurting someone with your words, something has been struck that should not have been.

From the word’s history

From Latin offendere 'to strike against, hit, run into', from ob- 'against' + fendere 'to strike'. To give offense is literally to strike against — which is why the same word covers breaking a rule, hurting a feeling, and, in sport, the side that strikes toward the goal.

來自拉丁文 offendere（撞上、碰上），由 ob-（向著、逆著）加 fendere（敲、撃）組成。『冒犯』本來就是『撞上去』；這也是為什麼同一個字可以同時指犯規、傷人的感受，以及運動中往對方球門撞過去的那一方。
