Possessive can be pictured as a hand curled around something with the thought 'this is mine' behind it — and the hand does not open easily. First it is objects: your things, and you do not want them borrowed or touched. Then the same hand closes around a person. Grammar borrows the plain idea underneath, 'belongs to whom', to name the my / mine / Mei's forms.

可以想成：一隻手把東西攏到自己身邊，心裡標著「這是我的」，而且這隻手不太願意張開。最好認的是東西——我的筆記、我的位子，別人碰一下就不舒服。同一隻手要是攏住的是一個人，感覺就變得沉重，因為人本來不是可以被誰擁有的。文法把這隻手底下最單純的那個問題（屬於誰？）拿去當名字，於是 my、mine、Mei's 這些形式就叫 possessive。
